Old Lyon heart of the city The ??traboules?? (Lyonnaise word for narrow alley ways)
Lyon and the renaissance etc??
?
At the beginning of the sixteenth century the true capital of the French Renaissance was Lyon . There are a number of reasons for this claim: it was an open and cosmopolitan city, the gateway to Italy and was the first to benefit from its artistic, architectural and intellectual influences which made it an excellent place to live. Old Lyon is therefore the seat of civil power (Palais du Gouverneur), religious power (Archev?ch?) and economic power catering to merchants and bankers in the ??Quartier du Change??.
This quarter therefore became the place to live and for almost a century the population continued to build and be energized by change. Rich notables such as the Gadagnes and M?dicis built luxurious hotels or fashionable apartments upon the foundations of Old Lyon.
The influences in style and architecture naturally come from the proximity of Italy with its antiquities and its Renaissance.
